The YWCA has a long history of working for racial justice:

The YWCA held the first interracial conference ever held in the South in 1924.
In 1936 the YWCA provided the first English-as- a-Second-Language classes.
The YWCA sponsored the first co-ed, intercollegiate, interracial conference held in the south in 1936.
The Atlanta YWCA cafeteria became the first desegregated public dining facility in that city in 1960.

Racism is a problem that affects all of us in metropolitan Tucson regardless of what we look like. We know that attitudes, stereotypes, and misconceptions about people who are different than we are can result in offensive comments, subtle acts of prejudice, blatant efforts to discriminate, violence, and death.

The YWCA of Tucson's Racial Justice Programs include:

The Leadership Registry
A program designed to make sure that women and people of color are adequately represented on all of our community decision making bodies.
Unlearning Racism Community Education Program
A four hour workshop featuring the film, "The Color of Fear," which helps individuals feel the pain of racism and understand what they can do to help eliminate it.
Tucson Anti-Racism and Diversity Resource Directory
This new resource for our community includes Tucson programs and organizations that work to combat racism, suggested activities and events, and books, magazines, and films that are available to individuals who want to take additional steps to learn more and to become active in the fight against racism.
It's Time to Talk
This is a new initiative by the YWCA modeled after a successful program in Seattle, Washington that will provide more opportunities for meaningful cross cultural dialogue in our community.

The YWCA of Tucson is pleased to present the first edition of the Tucson Anti-Racism and Diversity Resource Directory and we hope that you will find it full of information and resources that will be useful to you and that you will become active in this important effort to eliminate racism in our community. The Tucson Anti-Racism and Diversity Resource Directory is updated monthly and available on the YWCA of Tucson website: www.ywcatucson.org.

The YWCA is grateful for the generous support provided by Mayor George Miller and the City of Tucson Human Relations Council that has made it possible to produce the first edition of the Anti-Racism and Diversity Resource Directory.
