La Escuelito de Teatro
La Escuelita de Teatro is our literacy development and children's theater program for kids K-5 who live in the Ochoa Elementary School District, in one of our community's most economically distressed areas.
This program is offered at no cost to the students and is made possible by support from Pima County Outside Agency, the Stocker Foundation and generous donors.
Marissa Garcia, our program director, is a theatre artist and musician who has worked for the last few decades to give voice and shape to the written word through live performance. Marissa is a fifth generation Tucsonan who is also a teacher, most recently working for Tucson High Magnet School to design, develop and execute a one-of-a-kind Musical Theatre Program for advanced theatre students.
Marissa has been a working artist at the Rogue Theatre as a member of their Resident Acting Company. She is the founder of the Reframing Justice Theatre Alliance, a collective of artists dedicated to providing theatrical opportunities to incarcerated and formerly-incarcerated individuals, and they are currently collaborating with American Friends Service Committee.
Marissa loves working with students, has a passion for children's literature and for designing ways to get kids enthusiastic about sharing stories and reading. She has worked for SUSD and TUSD as a literacy interventionist for elementary students.
