RERoot Cohort

Racial Equity

Funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, YWCA Southern Arizona is working in partnership with Pima County Justice Services and Pillars & Bridges to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in the criminal legal system.

Together, they are part of the Safety and Justice Challenge’s Racial Equity Cohort . The YWCA is proud to be one of four organizations partnering on this project in Southern Arizona.

In 2026, the Cohort launched the Racial Equity Cohort Justice Panel, or RERoot Panel.   This advisory panel body has recommending authority within the Pima County Racial Equity Cohort.

The panel exists to:

  • Evaluate justice system policies, practices, and outcomes through a racial equity lens
  • Support accountability to racial equity commitments
  • Identify gaps between stated goals and lived realities
  • Recommend course corrections necessary to achieve equitable outcomes
  • Help move racial equity work from intention to sustained practice

The panel brings together justice system professionals and community members, recognizing that both institutional knowledge and lived experience are essential to meaningful change.
